A major illustrator of the mid twentieth century, Jim's versatility, originality and enthusiasm for the story shines through in all his work. Strong draftsmanship combined with extensive research allowed him to render believable and beautiful images across a wide variety of subjects. He worked for most of the magazines of the day, including extensively for LIFE - in addition to book projects and Christmas cards for American Artists Group.

Jim met future wife Lillian while studying illustration at Pratt Institute; they married in 1943. An accomplished painter in her own right, Lil worked side by side with Jim as secretary, studio assistant and researcher on most assignments. They built a house and studio in Centerport, Long Island in 1952, where they raised their two children, Roy and Lisa.
